Found in chaparral and other shrubby or brushy areas - usually with dense undergrowth.

Generally grayish-brown; underparts are slightly paler, and have dusky streaking. Note pale eye. Song consists of a series of loud, emphatic, whistle-like notes followed by a trill; suggests a bouncing ball with increasing tempo at the end; also gives a grinding, rattle-like call. 

Nests in shrubs or trees, where its cup-shaped structure is built from bark, grasses, and plant fibers. Feeds on insects, spiders, fruit, and seeds.
