Frequents grassy fields and wet meadows.
Buffy underparts have dark brown streaking on breast, extending to sides and flanks. Dark tail has white outer tail feathers. While walking, often pumps its tail up and down. Sometimes forms flocks of 20 or more birds.
Diet includes seeds as well as invertebrates found in terrestrial and freshwater habitats.
