This nuthatch is a bird of mature deciduous or mixed pine/hardwood forests.
Black cap, white cheek, white underparts, and comparatively larger size identify this nuthatch. Often faces downward while clinging to the trunk of a tree. Males have darker caps than females. Compare with Red-breasted Nuthatch.
Nests in natural cavities. Feeds on insects and plant matter, such as seeds.
