6:30pm – 9 p.m.

"I know I am not capable of suffering more than I did during those few minutes of suspense in the dark, surrounded by those creeping, bloody-minded tarantulas."

–From Mark Twain's Roughing It
Was Mr. Twain exaggerating? It wouldn't be the first time. Find out for yourself as we hike Mitchell Canyon in search of Mount Diablo's famous spiders. (Tarantulas are actually cute, fuzzy, and harmless; they even have a dance called the tarantella named for them.)

Cost: $6 per vehicle park entrance fee (exact change required)

Distance: 3 miles round trip with a few hundred feet elevation gain

What to Bring: Flashlight, good hiking shoes, layered clothing.

Leaders: Liz Watson and Ken Lavin
