A Day in the Life of Mt Diablo - Revisited ...
by Keith Patterson, Executive Director, MDIA
From the Mount Diablo Review - Fall 1997

On Saturday, October 19, 1992 over 70 local photographers both professional and amateur, gathered to photograph Mt Diablo. Not just some of Mt Diablo, but all of Mt Diablo. "A Day in the Life of Mt Diablo" was the brainwave of the then-Executive Director of the Lindsay Museum, Steve Barbata as the Lindsay’s contribution to MDIA’s Autumn-on-the-Mountain.

Following months of painstaking organization by Steve, Lindsay Program Director, Wanda Bishop, and many other Lindsay staff the photographers approached the mountain to take the definitive pictures of whatever their assignments were.

The assignments were varied - the Macedo to Summit Mountain Bike Race, Diablo Ranch, hang-gliders and rock climbers, flora and fauna, aerial photography, Sheriff’s Search & Rescue Posse work, artists at the Summit, Man’s influence on the mountain, the list was endless.

Over 12,000 slides were taken. These were handed in, processed and mounted and then juried to select the best of the day. The Photo Editor for the San Jose Mercury News had the unenviable task of preparing a 200-or so slide show from the 12,000 shots taken. He winnowed the day’s results down to 213 slides which highlighted wonderful images of many aspects of our island mountain. He was also heard to mutter that he never wanted to look at another sunset picture for the rest of his life.

The 213 slides were shown at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for The Arts on December 14, 1992 accompanied by original music by Larry Kassin and Tom Darter. The 11 "best of the best" shots were printed and framed and have been exhibited many times, including a show at the Bedford Gallery and at the Gala Dinner for the Dedication of the Mt Diablo Summit Museum.

The new Executive Director of the Lindsay Museum, Michael Duty, recently approached MDIA with a view to, once again, jointly sponsoring "A Day in the Life of Mt Diablo - revisited". The intention is that this project, very much in its formative stages would consisted of photography on one or a number of days as part of the 1998 April-on-the-Mountain activities, followed by a showing of the selected works at the Lindsay Museum during the Fall. At present other co-sponsors are being contacted and the shape of the project being determined - hopefully we will be able to get something into sponsoring organization’s newsletters and into the media around the end of 1997.

If you would be interested in being part of this project - as sponsor, photographer or in some support role - please leave a message on MDIA’s voice-mail (510) 927-7222. Leave name, contact phone #, address and the capacity in which you are offering your services. Someone will contact you when firmer plans are made.
